Top seeded player Dinara Safina lost to Aravane Rezai of France in the second round at the WTA Tour event. She has been beaten 3-6, 6-2, and 6-4 by her opponent. It was the second upset in this tournament after Venus Williams’s early exit from the second round. There was hardly anyone who could expect that he will fail to come back in the match. Dinara Safina finished the game with 17 faults.
After the early exit of these two great players, this tournament has lost much of its attraction and excitement.
However, second seeded player Serena Williams is still in her prime form. She has defeated Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova by 6-3, 6-2 and moved in the third round. I think that she can hold the trophy.
Third seeded player Venus Williams has been beaten at the hand of Kateryna Bondarenko by 1-6, 7-5 and 6-4. This defeat came in the second round of the Rogers Cup which took place in Toronto. Her opponent player Kateryna Bondarenko is now number 64 seeded player. For the first time, she took part at this tournament since 1997. It was obviously an early exit for Venus Williams. She was top favorite player in this tournament. So, her early exit means that this tournament has lost half of the excitement. However, 11th seeded payer Ana Ivanovic has moved one step ahead after beating the Magdalena Rybarikova by 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Ivanovic is one of the most favorite and probable players to have won the trophy.

World no. 1 Dinara Safina failed to reach the last eight of the Los Angles WTA tournament. The top seed Russian was handed a shocking defeat by Chinese star Zheng Jie who won the three-set match 7-5 4-6 6-4. With this victory Zheng reached the quarter final of the tournament and is now ready to face rising Australian star Samantha Stosur in the last eight of the tournament.
Zheng Jie started the game pretty well winning the first set 7-5, but faced huge challenge from the Russian who won the next one 6-4 pretty easily. In fact, Safina was on course of winning the match when she was leading 4-2 in the third and the deciding set. However, Zheng Jie had something different in her mind as she won the next four sets to clinch an excellent victory.
Safina has not been in good form since attaining the top place in WTA ranking. The Russian failed to reach the final of Wimbledon 2009 and now has failed to reach the quarterfinal in Los Angles. However, despite Safina’s fall, Russian tennis fans have something to cherish on as former world no. 1 Maria Sharapova reached the last eight of the tournament winning over Alona Bondarenko in a three-set game, even though she started the game losing the first set.
Venus Williams is perhaps one of the leading female tennis players at her time. She plays a dominant role in tennis court. She is always top favorite team and most of the time we see her in the final round. It seems that final round is a secured place for her in any tournament. However, at the WTA Bank of the West Classic tournament, she moves in the final round. In the final round, she will face Marion Bartoli of France. She beats Elena Dementieva by 6-0, 6-1 and secured her position. Now, she needs one more victory to be the champion of this tournament. Marion Bartoli bet Samantha Stosur in the second round 6-3, 1-6 and 6-1.
Top seed Serena Williams suffered a shocking at the hands of Australian Samantha Stosur. Thus, Serena’s nine-match winning steak has been ended. With the 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory, Stosur has ensured her semi-final progress at the Stanford Tennis competition. The Aussie would face Marion Bartoli in the semi final as the French defeated Jelena Jankovic to make her way to the last four. Stosur is naturally very much delighted after such a big victory. The 25-year-old admitted that it was one of her best victories of her career. Now, she wants to make it to the final by winning the semi final match.
Samantha Stosur started off very well against Serena Williams who was underperformed in the game. Stosur took the first set 6-2, but the American bounced back in the second set strongly to win it by 3-6. However, Samantha Stosur once again showed her skill and talent to outperform Serena Williams in the third set 6-2, and thus, ensuring an excellent victory.
