In the world group first-round showdown of Davis Cup 2009, Spain is now 2-0 ahead of Serbia as world no. 1 Spaniard Rafael Nadal pulled off a comfortable 6-1 6-0 6-2 victory over Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, while David Ferrer defeated Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic in 6-3 6-3 7-6 (7-4). With this lead, defending champion Spain has got off to a good start to their title defense mission.
Janko Tipsarevic could not put on any resistance against high-flying Rafael Nadal who missed last year’s Davis Cup final against Argentina as he was out of action with a knee injury. Nadal later expressed that he felt very sad for not representing his country in the Davis Cup 2008 final. Now that, Nadal is back with full of confidence and he is playing at his top at the moment, it is pretty much certain that Spain is hot favorite for this year’s Davis Cup too. Djokovic is considered to be the main hope of Serbian team, but he failed to live up to the expected being defeated at the hands of Ferrer in straight set.
